Chapter 5 - the saga continues... |
With covid having wrecked New Years plans already we have the first batch of Haskap Pie Filling and Sundae topping finished by noon on Jan 1, 2021 |

April 10th and the snow is gone early this year! |
May 14 brings a beautiful double rainbow! |
May 18 the Indigo Gem are blooming nicely! |
Then on May 21st we got some white stuff! Good thing Haskaps in bloom can handle frost up to -7! |
May 31st has some new Saskatoons blooming like crazy! |
Some really impressive new growth! Guess it likes the conditions! |
Production batches need to get bigger and bigger. And it's the third one this week! |
June 19th and an industrious bird shares the orchard with us and her nest of 6 eggs hatching soon! |
June 22nd looking lush and green!! |
Heavy production requires hauling lots of sugar for jam! :-D The Haskapmobile is hard at work! |
July 5th and we are ready to start manually harvesting the first variety of Indigo Gem! |
July 8th using our berry combine to do a row of large Indigo Gem. A big benefit is getting to clean the berries before they are put in trays going into the freezer! |
Pressure washing the trays after winter storage! Usually gets done 3-4 times a year :-) |
July 20th sees great large berries ready to go! |

Freezer filling up fast with packaged and newly frozen berries! |
Aug 11th and dugout almost out of water for irrigation. Last year ran out on July 21st - sure made a difference! |
Found this little critter crawling out of a tray one day - research showed it was harmless but gave a jolt nonetheless. Mother Nature sure designs pretty critters! |
August 23rd was a busy day of harvesting Beauty! |

Finally our first Sea Buckthorn berries ripening - too bad the birds ended up getting most of them! Can't wait - maybe next year we'll get a harvest! |

The geese are prolific this time of year! They like to sit on swathed cereal crops or in the stubble of the combined fields (eating next years weeds) |
Sometimes those late nights on the combine are blessed with amazing Northern Light displays! It was 1:42 am when this sequence was taken! :-D |
